The Rewind Technique
This is the kindest method, I have discovered, for quickly removing (or alleviating) the symptoms of trauma or phobia without continuously exposing the client to the triggers that give rise to panic and heightened emotional states.
This is where the Rewind Technique is explicitly different from counselling alone.
Who and what is it for?
The Rewind Technique is for individuals suffering due to:
- Complex Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (cPTSD = multiple events)
- PTSD (single events)
- Phobias
- OCD
- Some anxieties
Rewind Technique Briefly Explained
Typically, many of us will experience single, or multiple, traumatic events at some stage in our lifetime; for many these will become processed naturally over time, no longer impacting on sleep, moods, diet, work, or relationships. For others, however, the effects can become symptomatic – interfering in everyday life – some examples are by way of:
- insomnia
- ‘flashbacks’ that cause heightened states of emotions
- anger or irritability
- inability to function in all the usual environments
- avoidance strategies
- addictions
- excessive eating/drinking/working

UK BREAKTHROUGH IN PTSD TREATMENT GIVES RENEWED HOPE OF PROVIDING EARLY CLOSURE.
London, UK, November 2023 – The Rewind Technique, pioneered in 1991 by Dr David Muss has unveiled a significant breakthrough in a randomized controlled trial. The study, titled ‘Rewind for Post-traumatic Stress Disorder: ‘ published in Depression and Anxiety (vol. 2023, Article ID 6279649), showcases the efficacy of the Rewind Technique for both civilians and the military, marking a historic moment in trauma therapy.
The International Association of Rewind Trauma Therapy (IARTT) is partnering with the Complex Trauma Institute (CTI) in the UK in order to fulfil Dr David’s long-term goal of making his method available to all professionals who support traumatized clients. CTI is providing a platform for this internationally recognized treatment by providing training on the Rewind Technique at a fraction of the cost. This is available to:
Mental health professionals in Ukraine. Currently, approximately 300 professionals
have already been trained to the accreditation level, and another 200 are currently
engaged in learning this method.
CTI CPTSD Practitioner course participants, as well as being recently made available to the vast CTI membership network, as an invaluable method for supporting CPTSD survivors.
Dr. Muss introduced his Rewind Technique in 1991 through his seminal paper ‘A new treatment for PTSD’ in the British Journal of Clinical Psychology. Over the years, he has tirelessly trained over 15,000 therapists globally under the International Association of Rewind Trauma Therapy (IARTT), an organization he founded. This year, in collaboration with the Complex Trauma Institute, Dr. Muss has extended his reach by training hundreds of therapists in Ukraine and in the UK.
Expressing his satisfaction with the growing recognition of the Rewind Technique, Dr. Muss acknowledged the contributions of various individuals and organizations in promoting the method. However, as with most breakthroughs Dr Muss is mindful of misinterpretation or even adaptation of his technique. Dr Muss highlighted instances where the protocol has been adapted without due acknowledgment, often under different names such as the Reconsolidation of Traumatic Memory (RTM) protocol and others. He emphasizes that he is the sole authority on the comprehensive use of the Rewind Technique in both civilian and military contexts.
In conclusion, the publication of this latest study serves as a significant validation for the Rewind Technique, establishing it as a versatile and effective treatment for PTSD. This ground breaking development brings hope to numerous individuals who have grappled with the profound and debilitating effects of trauma. As the world takes notice of this ‘revolutionary’ breakthrough, Dr. David Muss remains at the forefront, dedicated to advancing the field of trauma therapy and providing renewed hope for those seeking relief from PTSD.
